We Could Go Back by Jonas Blue & Moelogo
- Lyrics
- Following the success of Mama (ft. William Singe), Perfect Strangers (ft. JP Cooper), By Your Side (ft. RAYE), and Fast Car (ft. Dakota), English DJ Jonas Blue is back with a new dance pop tune. This time, he has featured British-Nigerian artist Mohammed Animashaun, better known by his stage name Moelogo, on vocals. Inviting from the start with the plucking of electric guitars, this song revolves around regret and the desire to rewind time, as evidenced by lyrics such as, “Every night is keeping me awake / I keep thinking about all the things that I would change” and “Trying to drown feelings that won’t go away / Sleep in the bed of my own mistakes.” The repetition of “Tell me would you even, would you still believe in me?” goes a long way in underlining the theme of fixation. True to Blue’s style, the track is simplistic both in lyrics and melody. This isn’t necessarily a limitation; after all, in an interview with Official Charts, Blue himself has said, “My songs sound simple? They’re the trickiest ones to make – believe me.” Despite, or perhaps even due to, the simplicity, there’s something distinctively Blue about the melody. Furthermore, as a first-time listener of Moelogo, it’s honestly such a treat to have him on this tune. I’m particularly impressed by the tone and texture he brought into the bridge, which stands out yet blends in well with the rest of the track. All in all, definitely a song I’ll be dancing to for a while!
Love You Like That by Dagny
- Lyrics
- A relatively short and repetitive song that’s brimming with viral catchiness potential, Love You Like That is the latest release from Norwegian singer/songwriter Dagny. Her unique Ellie-Goulding-meets-Sia voice is super fun to listen to and complements the playful tone of this tune rather well. The track talks about being in love with someone, the kind where “nothing else matters”, even the fact that the speaker “don’t usually open up”, “avoid getting emotional”, and “not always clever with the words [he/she] use.” What I love most about this song is the absolutely flawless harmony gracing the chorus. The brief a cappella portion in the last chorus run is also a nice touch, and will definitely give anyone who hasn’t been singing along up until that point the urge to do just that. If you fancy a love declaration packaged in a catchy, energetic pop anthem, then this one’s definitely for you.
